Kop voor Nop
"Kop voor Nop" is a free cup of coffee or tea that you can order for yourself or for a fellow local who may be struggling financially.
Context
From my position at RAUM Utrecht as an impact creative, I’ve started a podcast called Algoritme van de Stad. Kop voor Nop is an intervention based on the episode on the Italian espressobar culture. A place where an espresso at the bar is still around €1,- making it a symbol of the inviting and open bar culture. Forming a huge contrast with the expensive coffees that cost anything in between €3,5 and €5,- and are frequently linked to gentrification.
The city of Utrecht also recognizes Saint Martin as its patron saint, renowned for his act of sharing a portion of his cloak with a beggar. This gesture, in which he offers warmth to someone in need, bears a striking resemblance to the simple act of giving a cup of coffee.
Concept
In collaboration with Goede Vrijdag and the Armoedecoalitie, RAUM introduces "Kop voor Nop." The goal? To make cafés in the city of Utrecht more accessible for everyone, also those who normally can’t affort there cup of joe. How? With a small contribution of €2.50, you can order an extra cup of coffee or tea intended for local residents who may be struggling financially. This simple gesture fosters a sense of community and togetherness.
The first cafés participating are Warmoes, Buiten bij de Sluis, Venster, Studio Sugarsnap, Kaffeetaria, SOIA, De Utrechter, and Kleine Max.
