Floating Market
Connecting neighbourhoods and its inhabitants with a floating market
Context
We were asked to find a way to create social cohesion between a high class residential area and a social housing block in decay that were separated by a canal.
Concept
In finding a way to create a form of social cohesion, we focused on the difference of income between the two areas. From that, the idea arose to create a market where people, no matter a high or low income, could buy and sell. The floating market was made out of foam blocks and has a weight capacity of 500 kilograms per square meter. We positioned the market on the canal to transform the barrier into a meeting place without social pressure. Most importantly, it made locals from both sides feel proud, together.
