Flying Grass Carpet

A giant pop-up park with allround activities by and for the residents of Zuidoost

flying grass carpet.png

Context

Just below train and subway station Bijlmer ArenA lies Hoekenrodeplein, a very large square between two distinct areas. This space lacks intimacy, doesn’t foster connection with its surrounding areas, and is instead used by most people to get from A to B.

Concept

The Flying Grass Carpet is a gigantic carpet made of artificial grass. It ‘landed’ at Hoekenrodeplein to make a more greener, vibrant and intimate space. The Flying Grass Carpet settled in September 2020 and was accompanied by a full program of workshops, sporting events, live music sets, silent discos, game nights, poetry, yoga, food trucks, a pop-up library, mini cinema and etc.
